What You Need to Know

Quick answer: Yes, PSW (Personal Support Worker) courses can be OSAP eligible in Montreal, provided the program is approved as a Vocational Program under the Montreal Career Colleges Act, 2005. Elite College’s Personal Support Worker Certificate Course a 28-week hybrid program with 300 hours of hands-on training meets this requirement, making it eligible for OSAP funding for qualifying students.

If you’re considering a PSW career but worried about the cost of training, OSAP can make it far more accessible. Here’s exactly what you need to know before you apply.

What Is OSAP, and How Does It Apply to PSW Training?

The Montreal Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a government financial aid program that helps Montreal residents pay for approved post-secondary and career college programs. It offers a combination of:

Grants — funding you don’t need to repay, based on financial need

Loans — interest-free while enrolled full-time, repayable after graduation

Bursaries — additional non-repayable support for specific circumstances

For a PSW course to qualify for OSAP, it must be delivered by a registered private career college and approved as a Vocational Program under the Montreal Career Colleges Act, 2005. Not every short-term or informal PSW course meets this bar which is why it’s important to confirm a program’s approval status before enrolling.

Is Elite College’s PSW Program OSAP Eligible?

Yes. Elite College’s Personal Support Worker Certificate Course is approved as a Vocational Program under the Montreal Career Colleges Act, 2005. The program runs for 28 weeks in a hybrid format (in-classroom and online learning) and includes 300 hours of practical, hands-on training — meeting the structural requirements that make it eligible for OSAP funding for qualifying students.

Who Qualifies for OSAP?

OSAP eligibility depends on several factors, including:

Montreal residency

Financial need (based on household income and other financial factors)

Enrollment in an OSAP-approved program at a registered institution

Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or protected person status (in most cases)

Because eligibility criteria and funding amounts can change, the most accurate way to know exactly how much you may qualify for is to complete an OSAP application or speak with Elite College’s admissions team directly.

How Do You Apply for OSAP for a PSW Course?

Confirm program eligibility — verify with the school that your specific PSW program is currently OSAP-approved

Gather required documents — proof of income, identification, and program acceptance/enrollment confirmation

Apply through the official OSAP portal — using your OSAP account

Submit required forms — including the Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement (MSFAA) once approved

Receive funding — disbursed toward your tuition and program costs once your application is processed

What If You Don’t Qualify for OSAP?

If OSAP isn’t the right fit, or you don’t meet the eligibility criteria, Elite College offers additional funding options for the PSW program, including:

Better Jobs Montreal — a grant program supporting unemployed individuals seeking vocational training

Canada Training Credit (CTC) — a refundable tax credit toward eligible training costs

Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) Program

Flexible payment plans — allowing you to spread tuition costs over time

Visit the Financial Aid page for full details on all available options.

How Long Does It Take to Get OSAP Approval?

Processing times vary, but it’s recommended to apply as early as possible before your program start date, since document verification and approval can take several weeks.

Does OSAP Cover the Full Cost of a PSW Course?

Not always. OSAP funding is calculated based on your individual financial situation, and the amount you receive may cover part or all of your tuition, depending on your assessed need. Many students combine OSAP with other funding sources, such as flexible payment plans, to fully cover their program costs.

Can International Students Get OSAP for a PSW Course?

Generally, OSAP is only available to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons who meet Montreal residency requirements. International students should ask Elite College’s admissions team about alternative financing and payment options available to them.

Final Thoughts

Yes a PSW course can be OSAP eligible, and Elite College’s Personal Support Worker Certificate Course meets the provincial requirements that make it eligible for funding. Between OSAP, additional grant programs, and flexible payment plans, Elite College offers multiple ways to make your PSW training affordable and accessible.

Want to check your OSAP eligibility for the PSW program? Contact Elite College’s admissions team or visit the Financial Aid page to get started.

Quick answer: Yes, PSW (Personal Support Worker) courses can be OSAP eligible in Montreal, provided the program is approved as a Vocational Program under the Montreal Career Colleges Act, 2005.
